How to Hire a Contractor
Ask to see a contractor’s license. The license must be specifically for roofing contractor work in the state of Florida. Call to make sure license is current.
Don’t allow unlicensed contractors to make roof repairs. Following a disaster declaration, anyone working as an unlicensed contractor is committing a third-degree felony.
Ask to see contractor’s liability and workers compensation insurance. Make sure the policies are in the name of contractor. Look for expiration dates.
Get a written estimate. Make sure the estimate shows the work the contractor will do & materials involved. When comparing prices, make sure the roofing systems are equal. If a down payment is required, it should be no more than 20 to 50 percent.
Beware of contractors claiming to be the cheapest and fastest. Hiring them will result in poor workmanship, inferior materials, and/or unfinished jobs.
Don’t pull the permits yourself; it is your contractor’s responsibility. Check your permit to make sure it specifies the same materials as your contract.
After the work begins, check to make sure you are getting what you are paying for. Are they using the materials specified in your contract?
When work is complete, ask to see a final inspection.
